Keeping our athletes healthy is a major concern. As such, BuckeyeMMA requires new students to have a few pieces of safety equipment in order to participate in our programs.
Before you come in...
The very first items a student will need are a groin cup and a mouthpiece. These are the most basic and least expensive equipment, they are used at all times during training, and they can be found at any local sporting goods store. Get these before your first day of training.
Required equipment
We require each student to have his/her own pairs of gloves. Students have approximately 30 days from their first practice to purchase these. New students can use the gym equipment in the meantime. Please check with BuckeyeMMA staff before buying the required equipment to make sure you're getting the correct items. We will NOT ALLOW gloves that are unapproved.
![]() 1. Boxing gloves. We box wearing 16oz gloves. As a general rule, most sporting goods stores don't carry good training gloves. A reputable pair of gloves will protect your hands and will be durable enough to last for years of heavy use.
2. MMA Training gloves. Thick padding over the knuckles, like a boxing glove, but with open palm and fingers allowing for grappling. These gloves are used frequently because they're a happy medium between the protection of a boxing glove and the versatility of an MMA glove.
***The following items are NOT required but are still recommended to prevent injuries*** ![]() 3. Hand Wraps. Proper punching technique will go a long way in keeping your hands in one piece. Hand injuries are common in MMA, however, so extra protection never hurts. Hand wraps will help to keep your fist tight and, in combination with good gloves, will keep your hands and wrists healthy.
4. Shin Guards. Throwing proper muay thai kicks will take its toll on your shins. Wearing shin guards will help protect your legs when sparring. Don't be fooled, however... shin guards are to protect the shins of the person throwing the kicks, not necessarily to protect the person who's getting hit.
5. Athletic Tape. Yes, Walmart sells athletic tape. We sell it cheaper. Your choice.
6. Gauze. Helpful for covering skin breaks or for wrapping hands/ankles.
All the equipment listed above are available for purchase here or in person at BuckeyeMMA. We offer our members incredible savings over catalog prices so save yourself some money and time and buy here. |
