Casticone Wins Gold
at UMMAXX Roc
Castricone hadn't stepped foot into a cage in over 2 years. His last
fight, a title defense for the IFBL, was in February 2008. Since then,
the BuckeyeMMA Co-Founder and coach has been staying busy outside MMA
competition. With family life coming first, he's done well just to stay
in shape while coaching the younger fighters and mentoring several of
BuckeyeMMA's finest prospects. But
when teammate Billy Vaughan had to withdraw from a 135lb title fight for
the Ohio based UMMAXX promotion, Roc stepped up and accepted the
challenge, ring-rust be damned...

BuckeyeMMA
Goes 3-0 at UVC 9
The UVC made its Columbus
debut at the Ohio State Fairgrounds on March 13, 2010 and BuckeyeMMA
fighters Aaron Hughes, Chico Bays, and Jon Washington helped elevate the
excitement level for the fans with a series of dominant performances.
Aaron Hughes started off the night with a 2nd round stoppage over
Dennis King. Hughes controlled the action early with crisp
striking and excellent takedown defense. King was able to survive the
first round but Aaron continued to pummel him for the TKO victory at
1:47 of Rd 2. Hughes' next bout is tentatively scheduled for May 15 at
the Amateur MMA festival in Columbus, OH. Click here to read the rest of the story

Kuhner Remains Unbeaten
In a fight expected to be a drawn out war,
Jake Kuhner showed a
packed LC Pavilion why he is among Ohio's best amateur fighters at
170lbs.
Matched up against J.P. Felty, a former Ohio high school
state wrestling champion who's amassed an impressive 8-1 record, Kuhner
was entering the cage as the underdog. Unfortunately for Felty,
somebody forgot to tell that to Jake.

Torres & Drysdale Visit BuckeyeMMA Former WEC Bantamweight champion, Miguel Angel Torres, stopped
into BuckeyeMMA a few days before his fight against Joe Benevides. This
being his first fight since losing the 135lb title to Brian Bowles,
Torres made some changes to his most recent fight camp. Among the
differences, the former champ traveled west to put in time with Abu
Dhabi absolute champion Robert Drysdale. Torres and Drysdale came in to cut a few pounds and go over some last minute details for the fight. Although Miguel was entirely focused on his fight, he still took time to hang out and discuss fight strategy as well as the challenges of running your own gym while trying to prepare for a fight at the world class level. Robert was more relaxed (no fight for him!) and helped clarify a few submission attacks before heading into the BuckeyeMMA cage to do a few rounds of pad work. To finish out the workout, Drysdale sparred a few rounds with Andrew McCoy as Miguel talked to gym members about the Benevides fight. After a few hours, Miguel and Robert were ready to head back to their hotel and prepare for weigh-ins the next day. We said our goodbyes and look forward to their next visit to Columbus.

Jason Riley Dominates at UMMAXX 9 The Juggernaut made a triumphant return to competition this Saturday at the UMMAXX event in Medina, OH. He faced off against Joel Wyatt (7-1) from Virginia, a match originally slated for the Shine: Genesis event earlier this year. Riley wasted no time establishing his reach by battering Wyatt with one powerful jab after another. His punches continuously found their mark and Wyatt's face showed both massive damage as well as building frustration. In round 2, Riley secured a tight head-tie against the cage and landed a vicious knee to Wyatt's jaw that instantly dropped him. The official result: TKO from strikes at 25 seconds in Rd 2. Thanks to all Jason's teammates and to all the fans and friends who supported him. Look for video of the fight soon at BuckeyeMMA.com!

Chico Bays Victorious at UVC 8 Chico Wins by KO at 25 seconds of Rd 1 Chico not only met the expectations of his teammates and coaches in his amateur debut, he exploded past them. Facing off against Josh Eisle, Chico gave up 7" in height and reach. He more than made up for his smaller stature with speed, power, and technique. After a brief feeling out process, Bays countered a long jab with a well timed right cross followed by a crisp left hook. The hook found its mark and dropped the taller man. Clearly a flash knockout, the ref waited a moment too long to stop the bout. Chico immediately took Eisle's back and secured a tight choke. Though Eisle woke back up from the punch, he found himself unable to defend the submission. A few seconds later and he was asleep for the 2nd time in only 25 seconds. Chico showed true class by kneeling patiently in his corner while the medic attended to his opponent. Once Eisle got back to his feet, Bays shook his hand and exited the cage with a well earned 1-0 record.

Albaugh Wins at First Strike Combat
Originally set to feature the pro debut of Matt 'Angerfist' Anderson as well as the return of Scottie Weaver, the 10/17 event suffered a bit of a downgrade when organizers were forced to cancel the professional bouts on the card. Of the 3 BuckeyeMMA fighters previously announced, only Justin Albaugh stepped into the cage to fight. Both Anderson and Weaver's fights were scrapped for various reasons. Despite being the lone BuckeyeMMA fighter to compete, Albaugh stepped up to the challenge and delivered a dominant performance that made his gym proud. A quick takedown put Justin in control early and he never let the momentum shift out of his favor. He defended a few submission attempts but kept his composure as he moved from one position to the next. Once he secured his opponent's head and arm from side control, Albaugh was able to sink in an effective keylock using his legs. The bout ended at approximately 2:30 of round 1 with the official result being Albaugh wins by tapout due to armlock. Congratulations to Justin Albaugh and thanks to his opponent, Corey Allen, for taking the fight. Look for video of the fight to be posted soon on BuckeyeMMA.com.
